WANDA’S AREA · OUT IN NEW YORK
One neighborhood. Many stories.
Saturday, October 24, 2026 · 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. EDT
The plan: MOCA’s Chinatown: A Walk through History, a guided neighborhood tour. Meet in the Museum of Chinese in America lobby, 215 Centre Street, New York, NY 10013. Tickets are $25 for adults or $20 for students with valid ID, and include museum admission before or after the tour. Advance registration is required; check the organizer’s page for availability.

Hi, welcome back to Wanda’s Area! If you’re looking for a reason to step away from your assignments and explore New York, this walking tour caught my attention. MOCA uses streets and everyday buildings to explore the neighborhood’s changing communities, from its Lenape history to Chinatown today. Having studied and worked in China and the United States, I’m interested in how people build a sense of belonging in a new place. I’m sharing this event because it offers a chance to look beyond familiar food stops and ask whose stories a neighborhood holds. For students, newcomers, and anyone curious about life between cultures, it could turn a Saturday walk into a different way of seeing the city.
I’m also drawn to the community side of learning together. As an education student, I think a museum educator, a fellow participant, or a neighborhood story can introduce questions we might never encounter in class. A tour like this could become part of a personal learning environment: a place to connect what we read with what we see. The people we meet and continue exchanging ideas with could also become part of a personal learning network. If you decide to go, bring a question about the neighborhood and come back here to share one thing that changed your perspective. Even readers who cannot attend can join the conversation by recommending another local history event. I’d love for this blog to become a place where we help each other find those opportunities.
Before you go: The route is normally about 1–1.5 miles, with little seating. Wear comfortable shoes. For mobility or access questions, contact education@mocanyc.org before booking. MOCA recommends the tour for ages 12 and up.
